Paystack is the dominant payment gateway for Nigerian e-commerce and with good reason. It is built specifically for the Nigerian market, supports all major Nigerian banks' card payments, bank transfers, USSD payments, and QR codes. It was acquired by Stripe in 2020, which means you can expect continued investment and improvement.

Paystack has a clean Shopify integration and excellent documentation. For Nigerian-focused stores, it is the obvious first choice. For stores that need to accept payments in both Nigeria and other African countries, combining Paystack for Nigeria with Flutterwave for other markets is a common approach.

Choosing the Right Payment Gateway for Your African Shopify Store

The right choice depends on three factors: where your customers are, what payment methods they use, and the transaction volume you are processing.

For Kenya-only stores: Pesapal or IntaSend. For Nigeria-only stores: Paystack. For South Africa-only stores: PayFast or Peach Payments. For pan-African stores: Flutterwave as the primary gateway, potentially with market-specific gateways where you have high volume.
